Some days the creative photography juices just don’t flow, these are usually the times when we hold back on the camera and do something else. However, being creatures of habit, the next time the juices are not flowing we will do the same and miss a great shot.
What has worked for me in the past is to take the camera and a single lens (preferably a prime), with no external flashes or filters and challenge myself to shoot with the reduced ability to modify light. Trust me this sounds simpler than it really is. It will help improve your ability to see/compose things differently.
In the shot above, I walked out with my 8mm fisheye lens attached to the camera and tried to capture something different. After a number of shots finally the composition above came to me. I placed the camera at the edge of the park bench looking though the arm rest and metered for the glossy bench planks reflecting the sky.
This shot was taken at 1/200s, f/8 and ISO 200.
