How to Photograph Movement

©Ankit Gajjar - All Rights Reserved

The photo above has not been edited digitally to show motion, the two cans were actually moving.

Setup:
Clean the bottom of seven cans and arrange them (bottoms facing upwards) on a clean, smooth surface. Once the locations of the cans have been set in the arrangement, remove one or two cans and stick some string to the base of the can(s).
Set you tripod overhead and set your camera to manual mode. Increase the aperture to get a shutter speed of at least 1/10s. Set your camera on timer. When the shutter goes off pull on the string slowly in one direction (per can) until you hear the shutter click back. This will create movement in the image. If 1/10s doesn't work for you, adjust to 1/5s or 1s. Make sure the can(s) is(are) in motion throughout the shutter cycle or the cans will appear clearly mid path.

Below was my setup before cropping and converting to sepia tone.
