During my walk through the park I came across this photographer taking pictures of Fall foliage. I took a picture of him, however due to the busy background and the strong shadows the image wasn't appealing to the eye. In such situations I rely on techniques such as - lighting contrast, color contrast, saturation, blur or motion to extract the subject from the surroundings, but in this case. I ended up resorting to the Oil Painting filter in Adobe Photoshop CS6.
This filter is found under the Filter menu> Oil Painting, my settings are fixed for all images as listed below:
Stylization: 4
Cleanliness: 2.3
Scale: 0.8
Bristle detail: 10
Angular: 300
Shine: 1.3
The settings listed above are just my preference and these will change per user preference. One suggestion is that the Oil Painting filter will not work as well is you have clear open areas in your photograph (sky, ocean, etc).
Camera settings: ISO100, f/8, 1/60s
Adobe PS: Saturation, contrast and oil painting filter.
