How to photograph a Silhouette?

Shooting a silhouette is fairly simple as long as your camera is set correctly. To get the shot above, I set the camera on manual and set the metering mode to spot. If your camera does not have spot metering, then you can set it to center or partial weighted metering. Point your camera at the brightest item in the general direction you plan on shooting. In this case it was the stone column on the rear left. An alternate method of metering is to walk up to the brightest item in your scene and zoom in so that the entire view is filled with the bright item and then set your meter. Return to you planned shooting location, set your subject. Make sure the subject is back lit and viola.

Note: Silhouette shots will not work if the subject is front lit, or if the back light is equal to the front light. The dominant lighting should be from behind the subject.
