Purple Skies

I shot this sunset with an external flash attached to bring out some detail in the foreground rocks. The trick is to make sure the flash is a stop or more below the scene. Too much detail in the foreground detracts from the main subject.

Set the camera on matrix metering and on manual, adjust the aperture (in this case f/18), I zoomed into the scene (just water and the sky) - then set the shutter speed. Once the basic parameters were adjusted, I zoomed out to compose for the foreground rocks. I set the flash to TTL and reduced the it by 1 stop. That was it, everything is in balance.

Camera settings:  ISO 400, f/18, 1/20s
